MWR stands for Mizunara Wood Reserve — Japanese oak, indigenous, shorter and less tightly grained than American or European oak, difficult to work and expensive to source. Ichiro Akuto built Chichibu Distillery after Hanyu closed, funding it partly with the old Hanyu stock he bought, and this blended malt draws on both: young Chichibu spirit alongside older Hanyu, finished in mizunara.
Aroma: Sandalwood and incense over sweet vanilla, with ripe orchard fruit behind.
Palate: Layered and fragrant — vanilla, soft spice and a gentle earthiness.
Finish: Elegant and perfumed, lingering rather than fading.
This is not a whisky built on power.
It's for drinkers who want to understand what Japanese oak actually does — where two distilleries meet the country's own wood.
Serve neat. Mizunara's aromatics are the point and water flattens them.
